Berlin-based venture capital firm Future Energy Ventures has secured €235m for its second fund, positioning itself as Europe's largest VC platform dedicated to digital energy technologies. The firm plans to invest in 20-25 startups at Series A and B stages, focusing on technologies that accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

According to Sifted, the fund comes at a time when climate tech investment has dropped significantly, from €27.8bn in 2024 to €12.3bn so far in 2025. However, CEO Jan Lozek sees positive momentum in the energy sector specifically, which accounts for roughly half of current climate tech investments.

"There are fewer deals, but more capital, so we see the market on the later stage is developing," Lozek told Sifted. He notes that investors are now concentrating on proven, scalable technologies rather than early-stage experiments, with renewable energy systems, grid infrastructure, and battery trading software attracting substantial interest.

The fund structure includes a €30m allocation exclusively for Italian startups, financed by Italian deposit and loan fund CDP. Major investors in the remaining €205m include German energy giant E.ON, the European Investment Fund, KfW Capital, Dutch bank ABN AMRO, and Polish state bank BGK.

Future Energy Ventures, founded in 2016, targets digital and asset-light energy solutions. Its existing portfolio features companies like Feld Energy (agricultural solar), Jua (weather forecasting), and Vienna-based Enspired, which helps battery facility owners monetize their power capacity.

The firm will deploy checks between €5-10m per startup, reserving half the fund for follow-on investments in top performers. Two-thirds of investments will target European companies, with the remainder going to US and other markets. As an Article 9 fund, Future Energy Ventures must meet strict sustainability criteria and disclosure requirements.
