Charité Breaks Ground on €521M Heart Center Project

According to a press release from Charité, groundbreaking ceremonies took place today for the new German Heart Center of Charité (DHZC) building at Campus Virchow-Klinikum, marking a major milestone for Berlin's healthcare landscape.
The €521 million project—funded with €421 million from the state of Berlin and €100 million from the federal government—will create a 17-story, 30,000-square-meter facility featuring 320 patient beds and 20 operating rooms, including hybrid theaters and cardiac catheterization labs. Completion is scheduled for late 2028, with operations beginning in summer 2029.
What sets this project apart is its integrated approach. The building is designed as a digital model clinic, incorporating advanced communication technology, robotic systems, and a new hospital information system. The facility will also serve campus-wide needs with a central emergency department and sterilization services.
Sustainability plays a key role in the design. Builders are using long-lasting, recyclable materials, low-emission construction supplies, and implementing an energy concept featuring heat recovery and efficient building technology. Green roofs and photovoltaic systems will further reduce the environmental footprint.
Research and education occupy approximately 10 percent of the total space, with dedicated laboratories, study offices, and teaching units. A clinical study center will enable efficient planning and execution of research trials, while close collaboration between scientists and physicians will accelerate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner called the project "a further important milestone on our path to positioning Berlin as an internationally leading science, research, and health metropolis."
